The short version

We do not set any cookies of our own, we do not use analytics, and we do not run advertising trackers. Nothing is stored on your device unless you deliberately choose to sign in with Google or play an embedded video, and in both cases the cookies are Google’s, not ours.

What cookies are

Small files a website asks your browser to keep, usually so it can remember you between visits. Related technologies such as local storage do the same job. This site uses neither for its own purposes.

Cookies we set

None. Reading this site, browsing articles and subscribing to the briefing all work without a single cookie from us. We keep no record on your device of who you are or what you have read.

When a cookie may be set by someone else

There are exactly two, and both need a deliberate action from you first:

• Signing in with Google. If you use the “Continue with Google” button on the subscribe page, Google sets its own cookies as part of signing you in. That only happens on that page, and only if you press the button.
• Playing a video. Videos in articles are not loaded until you press play. Until then the player is a still placeholder served by this site, and nothing at all is sent to the video company. Press play and the video loads from Dailymotion, or from youtube‑nocookie.com for YouTube clips, and that company may then set its own cookies.

Google’s use is covered by the Google privacy policy, and Dailymotion’s by the Dailymotion privacy policy.

Things that load from other companies but set no cookies

Some parts of a page are fetched from other companies’ servers. These do not store anything on your device, but the request itself tells them your IP address and which page you were on:

• Google Fonts — the typefaces, on every page.
• Image hosting — some article artwork is served from an external image host rather than from this site.
• Video thumbnails — the still image on a card for an article with a video is fetched from YouTube.

Links to YouTube, X and Instagram are ordinary links. Nothing is sent to those companies unless you click one, and the same is true of the video players until you press play.

Why you are not seeing a cookie banner

Consent banners exist because most sites set tracking cookies the moment you arrive. This one does not set any, so there is nothing to ask you to agree to. If we ever add analytics or anything that tracks visitors, we will ask first and this page will change.

Managing cookies

You can see, block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and you can browse this site with cookies blocked entirely without losing anything — the only feature affected would be signing in with Google, which is optional in any case.
